The Three You’s: The Simple Framework That Can Make or Break Any Opportunity

I’ve spent a lot of time on both sides of the table; interviewing young leaders, coaching executives, and walking into rooms where decisions are made quickly and often quietly. Over time, I’ve come to a simple but powerful belief that every opportunity evaluates three versions of you at the same time.

I call it The Three You’s.

I used to teach this to my mentees at Urban Ranger Corps before every summer session interview. Some of them thought it was too simple. Others thought it wasn’t fair. But all of them eventually realized it was true.

Because whether we like it or not, every person you encounter is forming a picture of you based on three things:

1. The Written You (Your Record)

Before you ever walk into the room, part of the decision has already been made. Your résumé. Your track record. Your results. Your reputation. This is the written you, the story that exists about you when you’re not present to explain it. It answers questions like:

  • What have you done?
  • Can you be trusted?
  • Do you produce results?

In many cases, this version of you is what gets you in the door. But it rarely closes the deal on its own.

I’ve seen people with strong resumes lose opportunities because the other two “you’s” didn’t align. I’ve seen others with average credentials rise quickly because their overall story was compelling and consistent.

Your written “you” opens the conversation, but it doesn’t close the deal.

2. The Physical You (Your Presence)

The moment you walk into a room, something happens instantly. Before you speak a word, people are asking:

  • Do you carry yourself with confidence?
  • Do you look prepared?
  • Do you respect the moment?

This is the physical you, your appearance, your posture, your energy, your presence.

But before you judge me, it matters! Not because people are shallow, but because appearance communicates intentionality. It says: “I understand where I am.” “I value this opportunity. ” “I’m ready.”

I used to tell my Urban Ranger Corps mentees; “Your presence speaks before you do; make sure it says something worth hearing.”

The physical you doesn’t require perfection, but it does require awareness.

3. The Verbal You (Your Voice)

Then comes the moment where it all comes together. You open your mouth.

This is the verbal you; how you communicate, how you think, how you connect. It answers:

  • Can you articulate your value?
  • Do you think clearly?
  • Are you authentic?

This is where many people lose the opportunity. I’ve seen candidates who looked the part and had strong resumes, but when they spoke, their message lacked clarity, confidence, or alignment. Your words must reinforce your story, not contradict it.

Where Opportunities Are Won (or Lost)

Here’s the truth most people miss; The Three You’s must tell the same story. When they don’t, people feel it immediately, even if they can’t explain why.

  • A strong written “you” with a weak verbal “you” creates doubt.
  • A polished physical “you” with no substance behind it creates skepticism.
  • A powerful verbal “you” with no track record creates hesitation.

When all three are aligned, that’s when doors open. Consistency builds trust and trust is what ultimately drives decisions.

The Deeper Lesson

This philosophy isn’t just about interviews, it’s about leadership. It’s about life.

Every day, in every room, you are presenting all three versions of yourself.

  • Your past (written)
  • Your presence (physical)
  • Your voice (verbal)

People are constantly asking, “can I believe this person?" Again, the goal isn’t perfection, it’s alignment. It’s making sure that who you say you are, how you show up, and what you’ve done all point in the same direction.

A Challenge Moving Forward

Before your next opportunity whether it’s a meeting, a pitch, or a conversation, ask yourself three simple questions:

  • What does my written “me” say about me right now?
  • What is my presence communicating before I speak?
  • Does my voice reinforce the story I want told?

Opportunities aren’t just about talent, they’re about clarity.

When your Three You’s are aligned, you don’t just show up. you stand out.
